Conservative measures

Helpful framework, not a cure

Compression, lymphatic drainage and exercise make lipedema more bearable and are part of aftercare. They are not our core service – the definitive treatment of the diseased fat tissue is surgical.

Please note: we do not prescribe long-term conservative programmes. Garments and drainage are best organised with your doctor at home; we focus on surgical treatment and aftercare.

Measures

What genuinely helps day to day

Used deliberately, these measures reduce symptoms and protect the surgical result.

Baseline

Flat-knit compression

Made-to-measure flat-knit garments reduce the feeling of tension and heaviness during the day. They do not remove diseased fat tissue, but they make daily life more tolerable and support the result after surgery.

  • Worn during the day, renewed every six months
  • Essential for six weeks after each liposuction session
Supportive

Manual lymphatic drainage

Useful where there is a coexisting lymphatic component or marked oedema. The effect on pain is real but temporary.

  • Typically one to two sessions per week
  • Prescribed by your GP or specialist at home
Supportive

Exercise and weight

Swimming, aqua fitness, cycling and strength training improve venous and lymphatic return and protect joints. Weight management addresses the obesity component, not the lipedema itself.

  • Low-impact activity is best tolerated
  • Diet reduces trunk fat, not the affected limbs
Adjunct

Skin care and self-management

Care of skin folds, self-drainage techniques, breathing exercises and pacing help with day-to-day symptom control.

  • Prevents intertrigo in stage III
  • Best combined with physiotherapy guidance
Limits

Why conservative treatment alone is not enough

Being honest about this saves years of ineffective effort.

  • Compression relieves symptoms but does not reduce the volume of pathological fat tissue.
  • Lymphatic drainage has a temporary effect; symptoms return within days without repetition.
  • Diet and training reduce trunk fat while the affected limbs remain largely unchanged.
  • Disproportion, pressure pain and progression are not stopped by conservative measures alone.
  • Long-term costs of garments and drainage frequently exceed the cost of definitive surgery.

This is why we plan lipedema treatment primarily surgically: lymph-sparing liposuction removes the pathological tissue permanently, while compression then supports healing and the final contour.

This page provides information on treatment options and does not replace medical advice. Whether a procedure suits you can only be assessed after a personal examination.

Move from managing to treating

If compression and drainage no longer control your symptoms, we will assess whether surgery is the right next step.
